Who are digital nomads?

Digital nomads use modern technology to support their lifestyles while embracing a location-independent lifestyle. They can work from any location with a reliable internet connection—whether that’s a high-end coworking space or a laid-back beachside bar—allowing them flexibility in choosing where they live and work. This way of life spans a broad spectrum of professions, from freelance and remote work to entrepreneurial pursuits and creative endeavors. Essentially, digital nomads master the art of merging work with travel, exploring diverse cultures and countries that offer digital nomad visas  while consistently earning an income online.

According to the 2023 Digital Nomads Report from MBO Partners, the number of digital nomads in the US is on the rise. The pandemic accelerated this trend: in 2020, there was a 49% increase—from 7.3 million in 2019 to 10.9 million digital nomads. In 2021, the figure jumped by 42% to 15.5 million, and by 2022, it reached 16.9 million—an overall increase of 131% since pre-pandemic times.

Requirements for Digital Nomad Visa in Montenegro

Montenegro's Law on Foreigners sets the guidelines for the entry, exit, movement, stay, and employment of foreigners within the country. Once a foreign national—whether employed by, working remotely for a foreign company, or running their own business not registered in Montenegro—enters the country in compliance with the law, they are eligible to apply for a temporary residence permit for digital nomads.

To initiate the process, the individual must personally submit the application in their local jurisdiction to the Ministry using the prescribed form, after which a certificate is issued. A foreigner who submits a complete application for a temporary residence permit before the end of their 90-day stay is allowed to remain in Montenegro until a decision on the permit is made.

The application must be accompanied by evidence demonstrating that the applicant:

  • Has sufficient financial resources to support themselves,
  • Has arranged for accommodation,
  • Possesses valid health insurance,
  • Holds a valid foreign travel document or identity card issued by the appropriate authority of another country, with an expiration date at least three months beyond the intended duration of the permit,
  • Has not been sentenced in their home country to an unconditional prison sentence of more than six months for a criminal offense that is prosecuted ex officio, or that any legal ramifications of such a conviction have ceased,
  • Provides documentation justifying the need for the permit, such as an employment contract or other proof that they work remotely for a foreign company or manage their own business that is not registered in Montenegro.

A digital nomad's residence permit is initially granted for a period of up to two years and may be renewed for an additional two years. A new permit may be issued six months after the expiration of the previous temporary residence permit. To extend the temporary residence permit, the digital nomad must submit an extension request in person at their place of residence no later than 30 days before the current permit expires. Upon approval, the extension grants a new validity period of up to two years. Additionally, digital nomads granted temporary residence in Montenegro are eligible for family reunification, allowing close family members to join them. Also, if you choose to establish a company or register as an entrepreneur in Montenegro, you will automatically lose your digital nomad status.
